effective black parenting program

A few things we love doing

EBPP

EVIDENCE BASED PARENTING PROGRAM (EBPP) developed by CCIC is a parenting skill-building. It is specifically tailored for parents, caregivers and service providers of African American/BIPOC children and youth ages 0-25. The valuable tools, strategies, and techniques it offers also can be applied to anyone caring for youth up to 25 years old.

Design

EBPP is comprised of 14 sessions, meeting twice a week with groups of 10-12 parents per session, each lasting 2.5 - 3 hours. Upon completion of all 14 sessions, participants commemorate their progress with a graduation ceremony during session 15. For larger groups, we offer a condensed one-day seminar format.

One New Heartbeat trainings will be Mondays & Wednesdays starting July 8, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM or Tuesdays & Thursdays starting July 9, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Expected Outcomes/Key Metrics

Through DHCS funding this Evidence Based Practice and Community Driven Evidence Based Practice, ONHB expects to strengthen positive parenting practices, improve the response to emotional and behavioral challenges commonly experienced in childhood, promote child social and emotional development, improve caregiver involvement and relationships with children, and increase support for individuals that may be experiencing heightened levels of caregiver-related stress among other outcomes.

EVIDENCE BASED PARENTING PROGRAM OUTLINE

EBPP aims to promote family pride and cohesion. In the first session, instructors introduce a framework called the Pyramid of Success for Black Children to help parents set goals for their children and identify what their children need to reach those goals. The remaining sessions teach parenting skills and educate parents on how children learn and develop. Skills taught include setting family rules, using positive consequences to reward respectful and desirable child behavior, and using corrective consequences to address disrespectful and undesirable child behavior. The program also addresses the topics of drug use, single parenting, and child abuse. After each session, parents are provided with home activities to practice the skills taught during the session.
